PetCentRx Case Study - Rescued 14-Year-Old Schnauzer, Trixie, Diagnosed with Liver Cancer Gains Improved Quality of Life with PetCentRx “Vim & Vigor” Wellness Formula

Problem

Karla D. of West Hartford, CT and her husband seven years ago had rescued two female schnauzers named Trixie and Buffi by their previous owners. Of the two, the silver and black Trixie had ever-increasing health problems. She suffered over the years from colitis, hookworm, bladder infections and pancreatitis. Her vet also discovered and treated her for several tumors in her bladder and trachea that were benign.

Trixie’s poor appetite, lethargy and loss of strength were like many of the common symptoms of pancreatitis in dogs who can suffer from a very painful abdomen, abdominal distention, depression, dehydration, vomiting, diarrhea and fever. “We had just about believed Trixie was our Dog of the Nine Lives and that she had recovered from all her former illnesses. But, in May, 2007, our vet diagnosed her with lymphoma of the liver. Chemotherapy once a week for 21 weeks was recommended but Trixie doesn’t enjoy going to vets at all. We had to determine what the added stress would do to her versus what would be the benefits of chemotherapy and decided in the end to keep her at home.

Solution

Karla’s research indicated Trixie might have a life expectancy of six weeks to three months without chemotherapy and that even dogs who receive appropriate chemotherapy usually do not live longer than one year. “When I contacted Pet-Togethers and told them one dog was living month to month with cancer, they included in my order Dr. Shawn’s book, “Preventing & Treating Cancer in Pets.” After taking the PetCentRx “Vim & Vigor” AM and PM wellness formulas, we saw an immediate improvement in Trixie’s quality of sleep and she began sleeping through the night again. She’s regained energy and strength. Now she likes to go outside and she jumps up to greet me when I return home from work. We know this isn’t a cure for cancer of course but the “Vim,” as we call it at home, has definitely improved her quality of life. Trixie’s running around almost like the little dog she was before the diagnosis and, while we know her life expectancy is short, we are forever grateful for the extra time she’s been given.”

Dr. Shawn's Comments

Liver cancer is common in dogs but only rarely occurs in cats. It most commonly starts in the liver, but can also spread to the liver from another cancer in the body. Clinical signs are often vague and include weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue, and possible jaundice. The best diets for cancer control are high fat, high protein, and low carbohydrates along with increased omega-3 fatty acids and nutritional supplementation. There are many supplements that are useful in treating cancer. While they all work on various cell mechanisms, in general supplements used in treating cancer have 2 main goals: minimize side effects from conventional treatments and boost the immune system. The human-quality ingredients in Vim & Vigor with its herbs, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids provide much of what I recommend to support the immune system for pets with cancer, as seen in Trixie.
